How to Calculate Paint Quantity

Start by measuring the length and height of each wall you want to paint. Multiply each wall's length by its height to calculate the wall area, then add the areas together. If you do not plan to paint doors or windows, subtract their areas from the total.

Wall Area: Wall Length × Wall Height
Estimated Paint: Paintable Area × Number of Coats ÷ Coverage per Litre

For example, a wall measuring 12 feet long and 10 feet high has an area of 120 square feet. If four walls have the same dimensions, their combined area is 480 square feet before subtracting openings.

Example Paint Estimates

The following examples use an illustrative coverage rate of 100 square feet per litre for one coat. Actual coverage depends on the paint product, wall condition, surface texture, and application method.

Paintable Area Coats Estimated Paint
200 sq ft 1 2 litres
400 sq ft 2 8 litres
600 sq ft 2 12 litres

What Affects Paint Consumption?

The amount of paint required depends on the size of the surface, the number of coats, and the coverage stated on the paint container. Rough or porous walls may absorb more paint than smooth, properly prepared surfaces. A major colour change, primer requirements, and the condition of an existing finish can also affect the quantity needed.

Always check the manufacturer's coverage information before buying paint. Keep in mind that the calculator provides an estimate rather than an exact guarantee. Purchasing a small additional quantity may help with touch-ups, but plan according to your surface and product instructions.
