How to Calculate Flooring Area

Measure the length and width of the room using the same unit. Multiply the two measurements to calculate the total floor area. For rooms with an irregular shape, divide the space into smaller rectangles, calculate each area separately and add the results.

Floor area formula:
Floor Area = Length × Width
Example: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 square feet

These examples show the floor area of rectangular rooms. Use your own measurements for a more accurate estimate.

Length Width Floor Area
10 ft 10 ft 100 sq ft
12 ft 10 ft 120 sq ft
12 ft 12 ft 144 sq ft
15 ft 12 ft 180 sq ft

How Much Extra Flooring Should You Buy?

The amount of extra flooring depends on the material, room shape and installation pattern. Straight layouts generally require less cutting than diagonal or more complex patterns. Doorways, corners and awkward edges can also create offcuts.

As a starting point, some projects allow around 5–10% extra material for cutting and wastage, but the correct allowance depends on your layout and flooring product. Confirm the recommended quantity with your supplier or installer before purchasing materials.

Choosing the Right Flooring Material

Different flooring materials suit different rooms and lifestyles. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are popular for many areas of the home, while laminate and vinyl offer different styles and installation options. Consider durability, moisture exposure, maintenance, comfort and the manufacturer's installation requirements when comparing materials.

Check the coverage stated on each package before ordering. Tile sizes, box coverage and installation requirements vary, so floor area alone may not tell you the exact number of boxes to buy. Include any additional material recommended for future repairs or replacement tiles where appropriate.
